The Department of Homeland Security said it had arrested three individuals in the development of land mines.
The arrests took place in southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, said a DHS statement late Monday.
The suspects were being held at the Arizona Department of Corrections.
The group also was detained in New Mexico and Arizona.
Aerial drones have been used to investigate land mines since the early 2000s, but most were deployed to detect the presence of explosives.
The agency’s newest use of drones is to identify land mines that are being detonated or found, such as in mines in mountainous areas.
The devices are also used to identify unexploded ordnance.
