Why Wisconsin Techworks should build an Apple developer portal
WASHINGTON — Wisconsin TechWorks, the state’s largest tech developer, is considering a plan to build a developer portal on its website for employees to find out how they can apply to work for Apple.
Wisconsin TechWorks Chief Operating Officer Dan Burch told The Associated Press the portal would let employees “go from a blank page to a blank website in an instant.”
“I can’t speak to the specifics of what the portal is going to look like, but we’re thinking about it,” he said.
“The idea is that the portal could be something that would show the employee the skills they need to apply to Apple.
It could be a one-stop shop for that.”
Apple has a huge presence in Wisconsin, with more than 70,000 employees in the state and another 300,000 in the U.S. and Canada.
Apple has an office in Madison, but a large portion of its workforce is based in the city.
Apple has been working on creating a developer hub in Wisconsin for years, though its plans have always been for the portal to be a self-contained area that is accessible to the public.
Scott Walker signed a bill in 2014 that required companies with at least 25 employees to have a developer account on their websites, but Apple’s website only has about a dozen employees.
The portal would be a welcome addition to the state.
Burch said the portal has become a great place for Apple to recruit and get employees.
“We’re in a very competitive business in Wisconsin.
We have to compete against the big players like Google, Facebook, and Amazon,” he told the AP.
“We have to go out and be the best and bring that talent back.
That’s what we’re going to do.”
The company recently announced a plan for a new campus in Milwaukee, a major development that has made it difficult for companies to locate and recruit workers.
